Environmental Measures

Among the social responsibilities that industrial corporations face today, NEG considers the environment as a top-priority issue. We are committed to the mitigation of the burdens placed on the environment as a consequence of our business activities and to the proactive development of materials that do not contain hazardous substances imposing environmental burdens.

Material Design

Glass that does not burden the environment

The RoHS directive restricting the use of specific hazardous substances in various types of electric and electronic equipment in the EU took effect on July 1, 2006. Lead, one of the restricted substances, has been widely used for the outstanding properties that it imparts to glass. NEG is currently making positive advances toward the development of lead-free glass products that exhibit properties similar to those of lead glass. Examples of our results to date include lead-free radiation shielding glass for mammography applications and lead-free glass tubes for encapsulating silicon diodes. In addition, we are also making steady advances with substrate glass for FPDs.

Recycling

CRT glassIn cooperation with manufacturers of home appliances, NEG established recycling technology and a recycling system for CRT glass collected from waste television sets in 1998, three years before the Home Appliance Recycling Law came into effect. The collected glass, as a raw material, is melted and formed into new CRT bulbs at our subsidiary in Malaysia.
