Oxy-fuel firing

Inside of an oxy-fuel firing furnace utilizing natural gasIn 1993, NEG installed Japan’s first oxy-fuel firing glass melting furnace, utilizing proprietary burners and a melting furnace design. The advantage of this system is that it removes nitrogen, which comprises 80% of the air and is not required for combustion. As a result, virtually no thermal NOx (nitrogen oxide), which is formed through high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in combustion air, is generated. The considerable reduction in the amount of exhaust gas and improvement in thermal efficiency will allow us to reduce the amount of fuel used and to limit the emission of carbon dioxide.

Technology for eliminating environmentally hazardous substances

Exhaust gas from glass melting furnaces contains components that volatize from the raw materials of glass. At NEG, to eliminate these volatile components we employ a sequence of two electrostatic precipitators. In addition, we have added a water-injection cooling tower for further reduction of volatile components and to help preserve the global environment.

Technology for analyzing environmentally hazardous substances

ISO/IEC 17025 certificateNEG’s Chemical Analysis Section within our Technical Division has developed technology for the accurate analysis of minute amounts of specific hazardous substances contained in glass (as per the RoHS directive). In 2006, we acquired ISO/IEC 17025 international laboratory accreditation, which certifies the validity of our methods of analysis, the technical skills of our analysts, and the impartiality of our operations. The analytical results issued by an accredited laboratory are thus recognized worldwide. Because only a few laboratories besides NEG have received accreditation for glass, this international certification will play a significant role in assuring the high quality of NEG products.
