ENGLISH COMMENTARY

1.General

We report the result of field test of a mechanical splice to evaluate the performance of a mechanical splice in the actual environment by setting a mechanical splice along the railroad.

2.Procedure

The test period was 14 months from December 1994 to February 1996. We used a mechanical splice in which precision glass capillary was used to align fibers. The basic structure of this splice is shown in Figure 1.4 fiber ribbons of SMF and DSF were used in this test. Measurement was performed every three months(Total 6 times).

We evaluated the followings:

1)Change on standing of splicing loss and return loss
2)Influence in passing of trains
We evaluate the difference of the splicing loss between passing of trains and not passing.

3.Results

1)Change on standing of splicing loss and return loss
The average splicing loss measured on every measurement using DSF is shown in Figure 2 as the change of standing. The stable result is also achieved using SMF.The good performance is achieved. Change of splicing loss is less than 0.17dB and return loss is more than 38dB.
2)Influence in passing of trains
The result of influence in passing of trains is shown in Table 1. Change of splicing loss of SMF and DSF is within instrumental errors in measurement by OTDR and there are little influence in passing of trains.

4.Conclusion

We did the field test in which a mechanical splice was set along the railroad. The good results were achieved in change on standing of splicing loss and return loss and in influence in passing of trains.
