NEG Develops “StellaShine® DuraMatt,” an Unprecedented Matte-Finish Glass-Ceramic Cooktop
Responding to the growing demand for matte-finish designs
in mid- to high-end models in Europe
Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Otsu, Shiga, Japan; President: Akira Kishimoto; “NEG”) has developed and will launch StellaShine® DuraMatt, a new glass-ceramic cooktop. The product features a refined matte-finish, supports a wide range of color variations, and is designed to integrate seamlessly with on-glass operation displays on the top plate.
Background of Development
In recent years, particularly in Europe, an increasing number of mid- to high-end cooktops have adopted matte finishes with reduced gloss. At the same time, demand has been growing for color expressions beyond conventional black glass-ceramic, driven by the desire to harmonize appliance design with kitchen interiors and appliance body colors. In addition, integrated designs that embed controls directly into the cooktop are becoming mainstream.
In the global cooktop market, black glass-ceramic cooktops account for the majority of demand. Within this market, design-driven changes are especially pronounced in the mid- to high-price segment, which represents approximately 20% of the total.
While NEG has established a strong track record in transparent glass-ceramic products, its presence in the black glass-ceramic segment has been limited. Recognizing the evolving design needs in the mid- to high-end market as a growth opportunity, NEG has introduced StellaShine® DuraMatt.
Key Features of “StellaShine® DuraMatt”
1. Matte Design with Rich Color Variations (Industry First*1)
StellaShine® DuraMatt achieves both a matte-finish design and a wide range of color variations. By combining newly developed highly heat-resistant coating with advanced printing technology, the product delivers outstanding design flexibility together with durability.
*1 Industry first: Combination of matte-finish and rich color variations. Based on NEG’s internal research.
2. High Heat Resistance and Durability
The product uses transparent glass-ceramic as the base material and applies newly developed highly heat-resistant coating through a proprietary printing process. In addition to induction heating (IH), it is also compatible with radiant heaters*2, where the cooktop surface is exposed to higher temperatures. Enhanced impact resistance and scratch resistance ensure performance that meets the requirements of the European and North American markets.
*2 Radiant heater: A heating system that heats cookware using radiant heat generated by a high-temperature heating element. Compared with IH, the top plate tends to reach higher surface temperatures
3. Compatibility with Display Functions
Modern cooking appliances increasingly eliminate physical buttons, consolidating operation displays integrated into the cooktop surface, which also serves as the user interface. StellaShine® DuraMatt is designed to maintain its matte appearance while enabling compatibility with full-color LEDs and LCD displays, contributing to both sophisticated design and intuitive operability.
4. Cost Competitiveness through Process Optimization
By optimizing the printing process, NEG has achieved a cost structure that facilitates adoption in mid- to high-end appliance models.
