NEG Launches Starveil,
A New Brand of Ultra-thin Glass for Space Applications
Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Otsu, Shiga, Japan; President: Akira Kishimoto; “NEG”) has launched Starveil™, a product brand for ultra-thin cover glass designed for space applications. By establishing the Starveil™ brand in the rapidly growing space business market, NEG aims to further expand its share in ultra-thin cover glass.
■About the Brand “Starveil™”
Starveil™ is an ultra-thin cover glass developed for a wide range of equipment used in space, including satellite solar cells. It offers excellent ultraviolet shielding performance to protect precision equipment in the harsh space environment, contributing to extended service life.
・High UV shielding properties:
Effectively blocks ultraviolet radiation in the UV-C to UV-B range, protecting precision equipment.
・Large-size Capability:
Available in sizes up to 800 mm in width × 2,000 mm in length, helping reduce glass lamination processes and improve productivity.
・Thin and lightweight:
Available in thicknesses down to 30 μm. Even at 100 μm thickness, the weight is approximately 246 g/m², contributing to overall weight reduction of equipment.
※Ultraviolet shielding properties vary depending on glass thickness.
■Origin of the Name
Starveil™ is a coined word combining “Star,” representing the stars shining in space, and “Veil,”
meaning something that covers and protects. The name expresses the product’s role in protecting precision equipment in outer space.
※ Starveil™ is a trademark pending application by Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd.
