IR Transmitting Glass “FI-02”
Adopted for Heimann Sensor’s Wide-Angle Lens

Nippon Electric Glass Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Otsu, Shiga, Japan; President: Akira Kishimoto; hereinafter “NEG”) has announced that its IR Transmitting Glass (chalcogenide glass) “FI-02” has been adopted by Heimann Sensor, a global leader in the field of infrared sensors, for a wide-angle lens unit for thermal cameras*.
FI-02’s high refractive index and high infrared transmittance enable the lens unit to achieve a wide 120° × 68° field of view, surpassing the previous product’s maximum of 92° × 59°, while enabling the capture of high-quality infrared images.

*Thermal camera: An imaging device that detects infrared radiation emitted by people or objects and converts it into thermal images.

Infrared sensors are characterized by their ability to detect the locations of people and temperature distributions. They are also expected to be used for people detection and monitoring, where privacy considerations are important, as well as for air-conditioning control. Their use is expanding in fields such as healthcare, equipment monitoring, and security.

Features of “FI-02” and Background to Its Adoption

Lenses for infrared sensors must meet various requirements, including infrared transmittance, suitability for mass production, and optical performance that enables a wide field of view.
FI-02 offers high infrared transmittance and a high refractive index, making it suitable for wide-angle lens design. It is also suitable for mass production through press molding. Heimann Sensor evaluated these features and adopted FI-02.
